8. Hills

“Hills are no fun, try and avoid them.”

“Ohhhh, that run goes over that hill, ickkk.”

“That’s a nice flat run.”

I’ve heard a lot of things said about hills over a number of years from different people who run. ‘Stay away’ has been a dominant theme.

I’ve read a lot of other things recently.

Going back a step, since I’ve decided to run a marathon, I’ve done what I normally do when I venture forth into a new arena. I read, lots, to learn…

Oh my, this running caper is a science! Diverse, rich and full of a bit of scandal. Training methodology, to Fartlek or not Fartlek (‘scuse me), and…

SHOES!!

That last one definitely the biggest scandal of all – go ahead and do a search on ‘minimalist footwear debate’ and see what comes up. I’ll wait.

Funnily enough I just did and found myself stuck in another research article on the topic instead of finishing this post!

I’ve learned stuff that has amazed me. I’ve found motivation in the learning. Thank goodness.

Run hills. Run slow.

We’ll get to the latter at some point but for now, I decided that today I was going to run hills for the whole run despite the anti hill, this is very different to an ant hill, vibe I’d heard over the years.

Finding hills is pretty easy for me given that I step outside and, well, there are hills. You can see it in the course I followed all around my neighbourhood on the map of course.

Pretty much every inch of it was some kind of up or downhill.

I felt like a turtle, then Usain Bolt.

It was hard, then hard.

Yes, even running downhill can be hard. Sure it’s easier to go faster but the work you are doing can be just as much because you are going faster – your quads work overtime downhill.

Blue is turtle, red, Usain.

Note how much blue there is.

I also noted how my ego didn’t like that much, running in public, cars driving past looking at the bloke struggling up the anti hill.

Funny how we make it about what others think when honestly, what does what they think have anything to do with the knowledge I have!

I got it done and was pleased with myself.

This is me unfiltered at the end. My tired happy look – I said I wanted to share the full journey so you’ll get the shots without my make up on!

8 down… ? to go.

Let’s keep going #whileistillcan
